The title sequence had a lot of physical elements and animated elements. It consisted of smoke, shards of glass and several dark images. This sets up the film as a thriller.
From the title sequence the audience get a vague idea of what the film is about. The director reveals someone scheming to destroy Gotham, the very same individual has images of key players like the batman without his mask, this is surprising when you take into consideration that the batman spends a lot of time and money in an attempt to keep his real identity from reaching the hands of his enemies.
During the title sequence the viewer is not given the location of villain, in fact the villain is not revealed at this stage. By withholding important information, the director manufactures tension. Only towards the end are we revealed a location, where the batman's discarded mask is seen on the ground. This raises up questions in itself about the batman's well-being.
We know the character within the title sequence is a villain, as he has several images of keys characters who are responsible for the safe keeping of Gotham. As you can see the villain destroys these images by submerging them into water and by piercing them with sharp objects. This reveals his strong hatred towards these individuals; ergo he has strong hatred towards Gotham, establishing him as a Gotham villain.
The director also uses montage editing in order to reveal key information like production companies and also actors. By doing this, the director is then able to jump from through multiple shots [extreme close ups, tilted shots, close ups, etc] at a fast pace, allowing him or her to match the cuts with the tempo of the dramatic non diegetic sound. Again, by doing this the director increases the tension and mystery and keeps the audience glued to the screen on the edge of their seats.
