The title sequence consists of a 3D map showing the continents [Westeros and Essos] where the series is to be set. From the map different fortresses arise from the earth, all varying in size.
By doing this the director establishes all the key locations for the series, noble houses bases and also locations of key battles.
The Game of Thrones theme music is also strong and dramatic. It really gets your sensory receptors buzzing. The strong repetitive bassy drum beat stirs up a strong emotional reaction from the viewer, the beat produced by the drum, sounds similar to the beat soldiers march into battle to.
The intro also consists of credits, revealing the actors, director and co in a logical format.
I would say this is one of my favourite contemporary intros, as it introduces the viewer to the main locations and families. It also gives the viewer a sense of the magnitude of the show, by showing a map with vast lands and fortresses. I also like the choice of music, as it raises the tempo, allowing the viewer to brace themselves for an emotional roller-coaster.
