Inception - Psychological Thriller
I did some more research on psychological thrillers, and how they begin.
The conventions used by Inception to establish the atmosphere, genre and themes are
- Red Lettering along with visual images - connoting danger
- Fast paced, edgy music - setting the atmosphere
- The black visual blocks, cross path numerous times, already suggesting the narrative
- Big, bold letters, suggesting an 'in your face' sensation movie
- The use of red not only connotes things such as murder, blood, death, violence...etc But it may also foretell what is to come in the film e.g an important character may die, or be brutally abused
- The use of black connotes death and dark. This is important as the movie is full of death, darkness and violence.
- The colours used are Red, White and Black all of which not only go well, but the audience can see every title easily and quickly. This however is very ironic as the film is the exact opposite, it requires thinking and a certain level of understanding.
- The title sequence has a sense/feeling of something/someone professional. If you look at the image below which is the film poster, all characters are suited and look professional this may have some kind of correlation with the professional feeling one gets when watching the title sequence.
The use of red in the poster as a title stands out as it is really the only thing with bright colour, this makes the audience instantly see the title but at the same time it is connoting violence and murder, which links to some of the men in the picture having guns in their hands. When looking at the picture you see an almost dark nature. The bit where the title is the road is almost black, this links to the dark nature in the opening sequence foretelling the dark nature of the film.
Inception's use of the colour red, is extensive and you almost get the feeling that they are trying to 'shove it in your face'. However it works, it makes the audience instantly know that the film is full of violence and murder which targets to their audience as a psychological thriller. We decided to use Inceptions idea of the colour red. It works well with our film opening asour film also consists of violence, murder and death. We also loved the 'In Your Face' sensation which linked to the bold writing and use of colour.
