Black Swan - Psychological Thriller
Being the same genre as our film, I did some research on the opening,
It is a very simple opening, with someone who appears to be drawing an image, as light piano music gets darker and heavier.
However the film has already started its psychological work on the audience.
The camera only shows segments of the drawing at a time, this makes the audience want to see the full picture.
What is being drawn? is how the audience feel however the music is very relaxed and subtle adding to the frustration of the audience.
The use of Black is used intentionally as it works with the films title name 'Black Swan' but it also connotes many things about the actual film. Black connotes death, darkness, evil...etc In the movie a young woman drives herself insane and into darkness because of a role she is given in a performance. Therefore this links with the use of white and black. White being that she was pure, beautiful, innocent (she was actually a white swan) and black being that she becomes ugly inside, jealous, dark...etc The picture below shows the difference between the white swan and the black swan. Even by the way she is seen to be moving shows a clear difference between elegance and crudeness, light and dark, innocent and evil, pure and ugly..etc
The picture above shows how the film title looks when it appears on screen. Notice how it is very faint and not 'in your face' or 'bold' this foretells the narrative as the white swan fades into the black swan. A light innocent person into a dark daring person.
By looking at what Black Swan did, we decided to use the idea where the color's of the title link to the narrative of the film. For e.g we used white and black for some titles then near to the end we used white and red showing how Jack (white) turns into the Reaper (red). Obviously white connoting peace, innocence and red connoting danger, violence, murder, blood...etc
