Editing Technique - Jump Cuts 

  

A jump cut is a swift transitions between two shots. This type of edit gives the illusion of the film jumping forward, one could say that this is a violation of the tradition of continuity editing. However, jump cuts can be used for many things, for example it could be used to speed up a sequence. Jump cuts can also be used to juxtapose a character with another separate character or entity.   

  

This segment of film taken from the music video called 'Magnetic Man - Getting Nowhere'. The use of jump cuts within this clip allows the director to juxtapose three different characters  wearing different coloured hoodies. The characters shown with the use of the jump cuts represent the apocalyptic horsemen stated in the book of revelations. So one could say that the director used this clip to add dash of mystery and tension to scene, maybe each plague brought by each rider will be inflicted on the women walking up the path. 

This segment of the film breathless shows the director speeding up a sequence with the use of jump cuts. You could say the director used this editing technique generate a sense of speed, or to cut the journey short by cutting off excess film.
